Note: This blog post is a transcript of Season 2 Episode 7 of our podcast, but stuffed to the brim with jaw-dropping art. Read along as you listen, and we hope you appreciate our audio adventures into terror even more by doing so.

Welcome, fear fiction fans, to another thrilling episode (and blog post) of “The Longbox of Darkness,” your nocturnal refuge of chilling horror lore. Today we delve into the dark corners of the graphic-paneled world once more, where the eerie and the alluring reside. So, as many of you may know, in February/March we fright fans traditionally celebrate Women in Horror, so I’ve decided to drag you along on a journey into an episode titled “Mistresses of the Macabre: Twenty Gloriously Ghoulish Gals that make Comics worth Reading.” Together, we shall unmask the brave, the bold, the beautiful, and the bizarre, celebrating the heroines who haunt the panels and pages we so love. So, dim the lights, tune in your ears and steel your nerves, as we embark on a trek into the realm of fear… and femme fatales.

But before we properly kick things off, it’s important to note that these ladies are not ranked in any particular order. They are simply my personal favorites. I fully acknowledge that there are countless other remarkable female characters in the horror comic genre, some of whom might not be included here. This list is by no means exhaustive, and I encourage readers to explore beyond it and discover the wide array of impressive female protagonists that the world of horror comics has to offer, and to leave some comments on the blog to share your picks, which we will of course, mention on the next episode of The Longbox of Darkness.

Quick side note: Before any of you ghouls tear my throat out, I did not include characters from Marvel like Satana and Lilith, Daughter of Dracula on the list. The reason is that they were never the stars of their own ongoing series, but rather appeared in one-shots, mini-series, or cameos. I will include them as honorable mentions, though.

So… ready to take the plunge? Here we go!

20. Death

Let’s kick things off by paying homage to the girl-next-door of the gothic world, the Endless entity we all know and begrudgingly acknowledge as inevitable – Death. She’s the star of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman and her very own spin-off series Death: The High Cost of Living. But don’t be fooled by her cheerful demeanor, quirky ankh necklace, or fashionably pale complexion. Although she may look like your average pixie, she holds the key to life’s ultimate checkout lane.

In an arena where the Grim Reaper is usually, well, grim, Death breaks the mold by being the friendliest face in the afterlife. She’s as comforting as a warm summer’s grave, guiding souls to their final destination with a reassuring smile and words of wisdom. The end isn’t always a bitter pill when someone like Death makes it feel like just another beginning.

Making her debut in The Sandman #8, part of the “Preludes and Nocturnes” storyline, Death is the brainchild of the master of modern mythology, Neil Gaiman. With the artistic talents of Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg, she was brought to life (ironic, isn’t it?) as a nurturing, perky, and remarkably approachable figure. She’s the cool older sister everyone wished they had, with the only minor downside that she’s your chaperone to the afterlife. But hey, nobody’s perfect, right?

19. Elvira

Get ready to have your socks knocked off as we dive into the thrilling world of our beloved Mistress of the Dark, the one and only, Elvira. This diva of darkness first sashayed her way from the small screen into the comic universe, gracing the pages of Elvira’s House of Mystery published by DC Comics in the 1980s. With her iconic hairdo, razor-sharp wit, and curves that scream va-va-voom, Elvira soon became the queen of horror comics.

This voluptuous vixen, a cult icon since her debut in 1981, has been heating up the horror scene for decades. Known for her quick wit, towering hairdo, and love for double entendres, Elvira’s charm is as infectious as her looks are stunning.

But her adventure didn’t stop at Elvira’s House of Mystery. She continued to spook and delight fans in her comic escapades, such as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark: The Omega Ma’am. This post-apocalyptic thrill ride is just the right blend of cheeky humor and chilling suspense, the signature style we’ve come to expect from our favorite horror hostess.

Behind this iconic character is the incredible Cassandra Peterson, who has been closely involved in the comic’s production. Peterson ensures that every page is drenched in Elvira’s signature campy charm, making each series a must-read for fans.

18. Madame Xanadu

Step right up and meet the spellbinding sensation that is Madame Xanadu, DC Comics’ resident Mistress of Mysticism. This enchantress is no one-trick pony, oh no – she’s a tarot card tossing, destiny tangling delight.

Madame Xanadu, or Nimue Inwudu as she was known in her Camelot days, has been in the business of mysticism since way before it was cool. From her medieval sorcery stint to her swinging ’60s psychic phase, she’s always got one foot in the arcane and the other in her curiosity shop. A shop that, by the way, has seen more centuries than a cricket match!

What’s her specialty, you ask? Well, Madame Xanadu is a dab hand at dishing out cryptic counsel and supernatural solutions, all while holding at bay those pesky forces that get all bump-in-the-night. She’s like a cosmic crossword wrapped in a riddle, cloaked in the mists of time.

The series exploring her adventures and misadventures in meddling with magic and destiny is a rich tapestry woven with historical threads and the struggle of a powerful woman limited by intervention constraints. It’s a journey that makes her a complex figure in the DC universe, and a must-read for all comic book aficionados.

The brains behind this ageless beauty? None other than the talented David Michelinie and Val Mayerik. They’ve taken Madame Xanadu from Camelot to comic book stores, and this eternal enigma has been captivating audiences ever since.

17. Lady Death

Now let me introduce you to a lady who’s been turning heads (and ripping out hearts) since her debut in the Evil Ernie universe. Meet the one and only Lady Death, a mortal-turned-demoness who made a pact to dodge the plague and ended up ruling the underworld.

Lady Death, with her bone-white skin, a waterfall of silver hair, and wardrobe that screams ‘heavy metal goddess,’ is the living (or should we say, undead) embodiment of every headbanger’s daydream. This femme fatale is far more than just a pretty face. Whether she’s commanding armies in celestial battles or just casually adorning comic book covers with her devilish charm, Lady Death is fierce, fiery, and forever out of reach.

But don’t let her ethereal allure fool you. Lady Death is as much about destruction as she is about beauty. Her journey began in Lady Death: The Reckoning and she quickly became a fan-favorite, thanks to her unapologetic power and, let’s be real, her mesmerizing looks. This woman is a force of nature, an avenging angel against those who have wronged her, and she does it all with a style that’s equal parts terrifying and utterly captivating.

The creative geniuses behind this badass character? None other than Brian Pulido and Steven Hughes. They brought Lady Death to life and gave us a character who’s been enthralling (and in some cases, seducing) readers ever since.

16. Chloe Pierce from Clean Room

Let’s turn the spotlight on the fearless Chloe Pierce, our truth-seeking heroine from Clean Room. Chloe isn’t your everyday run-of-the-mill investigative journalist. Following her fiancé’s mysterious suicide, Chloe decides to dive headfirst into the rabbit hole, her target being the enigmatic self-help guru Astrid Mueller and her Honest World Foundation. Talk about having a bone to pick!

Published by Vertigo (a sub-imprint of DC Comics), Clean Room is a mind-bending cocktail of psychological terror and the supernatural. Think of it as trying to solve a Rubik’s cube on a roller coaster – during a power outage. Chloe finds herself wrestling with horrors that lurk beneath the surface of reality, proving that sometimes, the terrifying truth isn’t just ‘out there’ – it’s gazing right back at you from the mirror.

The brains behind our resilient heroine? None other than the brilliant Gail Simone and Jon Davis-Hunt. They’ve given us a character who’s not just chasing a story, but bravely peeling back the layers of a chilling conspiracy, all while dealing with her personal demons.

15. Maika Halfwolf from the Series Monstress

Well, dear readers, if you thought your inner demons were a handful, wait until you meet Maika Halfwolf, the heroine of the stunning horror-fantasy comic Monstress. This series is brought to you by the dynamic duo of Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda and is published under the banner of Image Comics.

Maika’s journey is like a rollercoaster ride through an early 20th-century Asia-inspired matriarchal world, filled with as many breathtaking views as heart-stopping drops. Oh, and did we mention she’s part of a magical race called the Arcanic? Talk about having a lot on your plate!

But what really sets our girl Maika apart from your average heroine is her little…well, rather large problem. She has a monster living inside her, named Zinn. No, we’re not talking about the ‘I ate too much chocolate cake’ kind of inner monster. This is a real, terrifying, ‘keep you awake at night’ kind of monster.

This Eisner and Hugo Award-winning series is a delicious blend of horror, fantasy, and exquisite storytelling. It explores themes of identity, revenge, and battling literal and metaphorical monsters. So, if you’re ready for a wild ride filled with stunning art and complex narratives, buckle up and dive into Monstress. You’ll find it’s monstrously good!

14. Olivia ‘Liv’ Moore from iZombie

Are you ready to meet our favorite brain-craving, crime-solving, totally relatable zombie? Say hello to Olivia ‘Liv’ Moore, the dearly undead protagonist from the Vertigo (DC Comics) series, iZombie. The brainchild of creative duo Chris Roberson and Michael Allred, Liv is the zombie you’d actually want to invite over for a latte—just make sure to keep it decaf and brain-free, please!

Once a promising medical resident, Liv’s life does a complete 180 after an unfortunate encounter at a zombie-infested boat party. Talk about a real ‘dead man’s party’, right? Suddenly finding herself in the ranks of the undead, Liv does what any resourceful girl would do – she gets a job at the morgue to keep her new diet of brains on the down-low.

But here’s where it takes a deliciously dark twist. Every brain Liv snacks on comes with a side order of the deceased’s memories and traits. Like inheriting a pinch of culinary skills from a chef, or picking up a spattering of art history from a museum curator. It’s like a buffet of skills, served up with a side of scrambled brains!

Liv cleverly uses her newfound, albeit temporary, abilities to help solve the murders of those she’s dined on. Yes, she’s a zombie detective, folks! A little bit Sherlock Holmes, a little bit Dawn of the Dead.

So, if you’re up for a unique blend of horror, mystery, and dark comedy, served with a side of brains, iZombie is definitely worth sinking your teeth into. Who knew being undead could be so lively?

13. Tulip O’Hare from Preacher

Hold onto your hats, folks, because we’re rounding off this list with a real firecracker! Tulip O’Hare is the dynamo from Vertigo’s (a.k.a DC Comics) Preacher who doesn’t just break the mold—she obliterates it. A sharp-shooting, quick-witted storm of a woman, Tulip is a character who delivers a roundhouse kick to the face of convention.

Masterminded by the creative genius of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, Tulip is one-third of a unique trio that includes her ex-beau, Jesse Custer (the eponymous preacher), and an Irish vampire known as Cassidy. This motley crew aren’t just road-tripping across the country—they’re on a divine mission to literally find God, who seems to have taken an extended leave of absence from Heaven.

But don’t let her tough exterior fool you, Tulip is more than just a gun-toting badass. She’s got an unyielding spirit that drives her through the divine entities and sinister organizations that stand in their way. Her journey is peppered with dark humor and wild turns, proving that in a world gone mad, sometimes the only thing that makes sense is to buckle up and enjoy the ride.

So, if you’re up for a divine roadtrip with a trigger-happy heroine, Preacher is one comic series you won’t want to miss. Tulip O’Hare isn’t just a character; she’s a force of nature. And remember, in her world, it’s not sightseeing—it’s holding the Almighty accountable!

12. Becky Moncrief from The Sixth Gun

Ready to saddle up for a wild ride through a supernatural Wild West? Meet Becky Moncrief, the sharpshooting heroine of The Sixth Gun series, published by Oni Press. Becky is not your typical cowgirl – she’s the reluctant holder of one of the six most powerful weapons in the universe. And let me tell you, this is no ordinary six-shooter.

Becky’s journey, penned by the creative duo Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt, is an explosive mix of mystic relics, undead horrors, and high-stake shootouts. Thrust from a world of wide-eyed innocence into a whirlwind of dark magic and sinister sorcerers, Becky’s story is all about survival, grit, and the struggle to keep this apocalyptic artillery out of the wrong hands.

In The Sixth Gun, the Wild West is reimagined as a haunted frontier teeming with skinwalkers, spirits, and arcane forces. The revolver at the heart of it all, the Sixth Gun, has the power to either reshape the world or end it. Talk about a heavy burden to bear!

So, comic book fans, if you’re in the mood for a supernatural showdown featuring a gunslinger who’s as fierce as she is determined, gallop on over to Becky Moncrief’s world in The Sixth Gun. Just remember, this ain’t your grandpappy’s Western tale!

11. Rowan Black from the Series Black Magic

Saddle up, supernatural sleuths, because it’s time to step into the mystical world of our favorite witchy detective, Rowan Black. She’s the leading lady of the mesmerizing series, “Black Magick,” published by the masters of the comic universe, Image Comics.

Created by the comic book dream team of Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott, Rowan Black spins a web of intrigue and enchantment that will have you spellbound. By day, she’s cracking cases with the Portsmouth PD, and by night, she’s conjuring up spells and navigating the labyrinth of modern witchcraft. Talk about a double life!

Rowan’s story is a captivating mix of gothic-noir and magic realism, where ancient rituals meet gritty detective work. She’s a master of balance, constantly teetering on the edge of her two worlds. But let’s be honest – keeping a secret as big as a witch’s broom closet isn’t exactly a walk in the park. Especially when you’ve got dark forces eager to drag your skeletons out into the light.

But fear not, readers. Rowan Black isn’t just your average witch. She’s a force to be reckoned with, a beacon of strength in the face of darkness. Whether she’s flashing her badge or her spellbook, Rowan is the embodiment of power, legacy, and, of course, a little bit of black magic.

10. Pearl Jones from American Vampire

Lights, camera, action! Get ready to meet Pearl Jones, the starlet-turned-sanguine who’s putting a fresh bite into the vampire genre. She’s the leading lady in American Vampire, a comic series that’s less about bats and garlic, and more about blood, revenge, and the dark side of the American Dream.

Published by the ever-adventurous Vertigo (DC Comics) and later under the DC Black Label, this series sees Pearl, a struggling actress from the 1920s, take a detour from the walk of fame to the path of the undead. And let me tell you, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill Hammer Horror vampire narrative. Pearl’s not just any vamp—she’s an American Vampire, and she’s got the fangs and fortitude to prove it.

The creative masterminds behind this bloodcurdling beauty? None other than Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque. They’ve taken Pearl from the casting couch to the vampiric vanguard, painting a crimson streak across the history of the American century.

Pearl’s journey is one of transformation and vengeance. She’s out for blood and not just to quench her thirst. She’s after those who have wronged her, delivering justice one bite at a time. But there’s a twist in this tale. Pearl’s not your typical vampire—she’s faster, stronger, and (thankfully for her complexion) immune to the harsh rays of the sun.

Her story is also entwined with her complex relationship with Skinner Sweet, the original American Vampire. Their stories create a rich tapestry of narrative that redefines the vampire mythos, set against the backdrop of historical events and cultural shifts.

So, if you’re tired of the same old vampire tales, why not sink your teeth into American Vampire? Just be warned, this is one comic that bites back!

9. Emmy Crawford from Harrow County

Get ready, folks, for a thrilling journey into the heartland of horror – Harrow County. Now, brace yourselves, because this isn’t your typical stroll in the park. No, sir! When you’re in Harrow County, the trees whisper tales of witches, and the woods echo with eerie enchantments. This, my friends, is the hometown of our brilliant heroine, Emmy Crawford.

Crafted by the creative duo Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook, and published by the esteemed Dark Horse Comics, Emmy is not your average country girl. Oh no! On the eve of her eighteenth birthday, she stumbles upon a chilling revelation. She’s got a supernatural connection to the land that goes beyond anything she ever imagined. And guess what? The townsfolk, they’ve got some rather unsettling plans for her.

But Emmy, that brave soul, is unfazed. Like a moth drawn to a flame, she delves deeper into the mysteries of her birthright. With each haunting secret she unravels, her bond with the creatures and spirits of Harrow County intensifies. Before she knows it, the lines between human and monster blur. Now, that’s what I call a plot twist!

What makes Harrow County stand out is its seamless blend of the tender and the terrifying. It’s not just a spooky story with witches, ghosts, and ghouls. Oh no, it’s much more! It’s a poignant coming-of-age narrative intertwined with themes of family, identity, and courage. Emmy’s journey compels us to question: what is the true horror? The monsters lurking in the woods, or the darkness that dwells within us?

So, folks, if you’re up for a mesmerizing dance with the dark, Emmy’s journey is your ticket to a thrill ride. Just remember – in Harrow County, the magic is as enchanting as the brave Emmy herself.

8. Liz Sherman from the Hellboy and the BPRD Comic Books

Ignite your interest, for we’re about to get lit with Liz Sherman, the pyrokinetic powerhouse of the B.P.R.D. (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense). Liz’s fiery tale began as a tragic inferno when her uncontrollable abilities incinerated her family, leading her to a life cloaked in ashes and angst. Discovered and nurtured by the enigmatic Hellboy, Liz became a beacon (quite literally) for the B.P.R.D., using her flame-forged powers to torch the terrors that threaten our world. Her journey through the pages of Dark Horse Comics is a smoldering saga of redemption, resilience, and the occasional roasted revenant. If you like your heroines with a side of spontaneous combustion, Liz Sherman will surely spark your fancy.

Liz’s journey begins tragically when, as a child, she accidentally unleashes her fiery powers, resulting in the death of her family. Taken in by the B.P.R.D., she becomes a formidable agent, using her abilities to combat supernatural threats. Liz’s story arcs, such as her struggle with control over her powers and the haunting visions of apocalypse, showcase her as a character of depth, resilience, and fiery determination

Her origins are shrouded in mystery, deeply tied to the occult and eldritch entities. Throughout the series, Josephine navigates through different eras, from the 1950s to the modern day, leaving a trail of obsessed lovers and bodies in her wake. Her character is a fascinating exploration of the femme fatale archetype, but with a supernatural twist.

6. Junji Ito’s Tomie

Ah, Tomie—Junji Ito’s immortal siren, whose beauty drives men to madness, murder, and morbid obsession. This beguiling beauty is not just a face to die for; she’s a face that will make you die—or worse, attempt to destroy her, only to discover she cannot be killed. Tomie regenerates from even the smallest piece of herself, making her as eternal as the horror she embodies. Her stories, a macabre mosaic of jealousy, obsession, and the grotesque, are a cornerstone of Ito’s horror empire. Tomie is the nightmare that walks in beauty, a testament to the terrifying allure of the abyss that gazes back into you.

Tomie is the undying beauty created by the master of horror manga, Junji Ito. First appearing in Ito’s debut work, Tomie is a young woman who drives those around her to madness and murder, only to regenerate and return, time and again. Her stories are a chilling blend of beauty, horror, and the grotesque, as she comes back from every dismemberment and death, often in horrifying ways. Tomie is a nightmare made flesh, embodying the terror of the inescapable and the eternal, making her one of the most unforgettable characters in horror manga.

In the pages of Something is Killing the Children, written by James Tynion IV and illustrated by Werther Dell’Edera, Erica arrives in the town of Archer’s Peak to confront the unspeakable horrors feasting on its children. With her trusty blade and a badge that signals her membership in the enigmatic Order of St. George, Erica cuts through secrets and sinew alike. She’s the boogeyman’s boogeyman, a relentless force draped in a cloak of white and armed with a glare that could silence shadows. 4. Dancy Flammarion from Alabaster: Wolves

Whispering her way through the Southern Gothic swamps comes Dancy Flammarion, an albino angel of death with a divine mission to dispatch demons back to their fiery pits. Created by Caitlín R. Kiernan and brought to life in the pages of Alabaster: Wolves by Dark Horse Comics, Dancy is as enigmatic as she is lethal. With a sword in hand and a spectral menagerie of otherworldly guides, she walks a lonely road where the line between savior and slayer blurs like a ghost in the fog. Dancy’s not just battling monsters; she’s wrestling with her own faith and the darkness that lurks within.

Dancy Flammarion may look delicate with her albinism, but she’s a fierce warrior guided by angels to purge the earth of demons. Her story is one of divine vengeance, as she travels the Southern United States encountering all manner of creepy creatures and grappling with her own faith and purpose. Dancy’s narrative is a Southern Gothic tale woven with dark fantasy and the supernatural, making her a unique and compelling character in the genre.

3. Sabrina Spellman

Last but certainly not least, we cast a bewitching glance at Sabrina Spellman, the teenage witch who’s been casting spells since the ’60s but got a devilish makeover in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Published by Archie Horror, a macabre imprint of Archie Comics, this isn’t your mother’s Sabrina. Gone are the days of quirky aunts and talking cats—well, Salem still talks, but he’s far more sinister now. This Sabrina walks a thorny path between the mortal world and the Church of Night, where every incantation comes with a price, and every rite of passage could be your last. It’s a coming-of-age tale wrapped in a shroud, sprinkled with pentagrams, and served with a side of soul-selling.

Sabrina Spellman, the teenage witch of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, is a character who’s been charming readers since her debut in Archie Comics. In this darker and more mature take on the character, Sabrina navigates the treacherous path between her mortal life and her witch heritage. As she comes of age, she faces eldritch horrors, family secrets, and the high school drama that comes with being a half-witch, half-mortal. It’s a bewitching mix of horror, drama, and the occult with a side of teenage angst.

2. Cassie Hack

Next, we sharpen our machetes for Cassie Hack, the slasher-slaying siren of the Hack/Slash series. This goth-glam grim reaper of gruesome ghouls first took up her baseball bat in the name of vengeance in 2004, courtesy of writer Tim Seeley and Devil’s Due Publishing. Cassie’s not your average horror heroine; she’s a survivor turned hunter, with a personal vendetta against those knife-wielding, mask-donning maniacs who just can’t seem to stay dead. With her trusty sidekick Vlad, this dynamic duo delivers a one-two punch that’s part Buffy the Vampire Slayer, part therapy session with chainsaws.

Cassie Hack is the badass protagonist of Hack/Slash, a series that turns the slasher genre on its head. Cassie, along with her partner Vlad, travels the United States hunting down and destroying slashers—reanimated killers who just can’t seem to stay dead. Her origin is as tragic as they come; she had to kill her own mother, who became a slasher known as “The Lunch Lady” after committing suicide. Cassie’s life is a grim road trip filled with blood, guts, and the occasional dark humor.

1. Vampirella

First up is the extraterrestrial enchantress herself, Vampirella! Hailing from the planet Drakulon where rivers run red with blood (talk about your goth paradise), this vampiric vixen crash-landed onto Earth and into our hearts back in 1969. Published by Warren Publishing and later by Dynamite Entertainment, Vampirella has been seducing the living and the undead alike with her scanty scarlet garb that leaves little to the imagination and everything to nightmares. With a thirst for justice (and the occasional plasma cocktail), she’s been staking her claim as the queen of scream and the pin-up poster child for every horror hound’s crypt.

Vampirella is the extraterrestrial vampiress who’s been lighting up the night since her first appearance in “Vampirella” #1 back in 1969. Created by Forrest J Ackerman and costume designer Trina Robbins, and with a stunning cover by Frank Frazetta, Vampirella hails from the planet Drakulon where blood flows like rivers. When her home planet faced a blood drought due to a dying binary star, she hopped on a spaceship to Earth to quench her thirst and ended up fighting evil-doers. Vampirella’s powers include superhuman strength, speed, agility, and a healing factor, not to mention telepathy. She’s immune to the usual vampire weaknesses like sunlight, garlic, and holy symbols, which makes her quite the formidable force against her foes.

Over the years, her origin story has seen different versions, from being an alien to the daughter of Lilith, but one thing remains constant: her mission to rid the Earth of evil vampires. Some significant story arcs include her battles against the Blood Red Queen, Hemorrhage, and even Dracula himself. She’s also been through a quest to discover her true origins, learning that she is the first of a new breed of vampire, evolved for the new millennium. Vampirella’s journey is a gory trek through horror, fantasy, and a bit of sci-fi, all while rocking that iconic and risqué costume. So what’s not to love?
